Metallurgical Engineer
LiquidPiston, Inc. is seeking a Metallurgical Engineer to assist in the development of our rotary internal combustion engines.
Requirements:
- MS or higher in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or similar.
- 5+ years of professional experience
- Understanding of machine design/engines and physical properties required in their parts. Keywords: fatigue analysis, tribology, thermal barriers, welding
- Ability to self-direct and independently solve problems
- Expertise with lightweight alloys (Al, Mg, Ti, others), and hybrid materials such as MMC
- Expertise with tribology (lubricated wear), material durability for engine components, and coatings (platings, PVD/CVD, HVOF)
- Knowledge of both traditional and modern manufacturing for precision metal parts
- Expertise with aluminum and steel alloys, process selection, heat treatment and processing for property enhancement
- Experience in post-service evaluation and failure analysis
- Invent/generate ideas to improve the performance of LiquidPiston’s engines
- Collaborate with outside specialists in specific areas (example: gears, seals)
- Maintain metallurgy lab including heat treat ovens, hardness testers, microscopes, wear test machine, etc
- Guide development engineers on material selection and simulation
- Select and act as primary technical contact for raw material suppliers
- Support engine testing, especially by inspection, analysis, and reporting of post-test engine hardware
- Create and follow standardized procedures related to material selection and processing
- Present ideas and results to management and engineering teams.
- Maintain a spirited, open-minded personality and “can-do” attitude during the course of challenging R&D projects
- Experience or interest in engines
- Good communication and proposal writing skills.
- Experience working around a machine shop/prototype environment.
- Experience supporting novel product development
- Training in CAD (Solidworks) and common mechanical engineering simulation tools (ANSYS, MATLAB)
